T-Ball!

Jax and his friend Ben started t-ball last week.

It's pretty much the cutest, funniest thing you've ever seen.

3, 4, and 5 year olds don't really know how to stay in their position. EVERYONE runs after EVERY ball. And most of the time when they're batting and running the bases, they can't find the base to run to. Or they don't realize they are supposed to run and they just stand there. It's awesome.

These two are the cutest!

Practicing catching with Ben's daddy

Practicing throwing

Practicing hitting. Emphasis on the word practicing.... notice there's no ball?? Ha!

GO NATIONALS!

My mom helped out with Lexi and I snapped this adorable picture of them.
Those chubby thighs. I die.

A camping we will go...

A few weekends ago we went up to Santa Cruz and went camping with some friends of ours. They brought their nice camper, and we brought our tent and air mattress. And friends, let me tell you...

It. Was. Cold.

I knew it would be cold at night, and I thought I had packed accordingly. But even with layers of jammies and layers of blankets, we were still really cold at night. Oh well. We survived and still had a great time sitting by the fire, roasting s'mores, and playing at the Beach Boardwalk.

While we were at the Boardwalk, we ran into my aunt, uncle, and their kids, who live 2.5 hours down the coastline. WHAT ARE THE ODDS??

Jax insisted on riding the log ride, and didn't care that he got soaked. Kids are crazy.

What a difference 8 months makes!
Also? WHY did I post that terrible picture (on the left) of Lexi on Instagram 8 months ago??

We're already planning our next camping trip with our friends. But this time, we'll be going in August (yay warmth!) and staying by the lake.

I can't wait!

Insta-Randoms

Don't forget to come follow me on Bloglovin.

We've been having gorgeous weather here in California recently. We are soaking it all in and have been spending lots of time getting our vitamin D! I've been trying to stay busy and keep the kids busy, so we've had park dates, swimming lessons, tball, and dinner dates. I love this time of year!

Here are some recent iPhone/Instagram pictures. You can follow me @jennahansen

I'm still trying to lose the last bit of baby weight. I make good progress when I put my mind to it.... but then I get lazy and fall off the bandwagon. I'm at my pre-Lexi weight, but I would like to lose at least 5 more pounds, but hopefully 10!

Breakfasts like this help... peanut butter whole wheat toast, fresh berries, and water.

One of our favorite dinners... in small, medium, and large version. Ha!
Baby plate (pesto baked chicken, strawberries)
Kid plate (pesto baked chicken, blueberries, carrots, 1 bite of roasted bell pepper with cheese)
Grown up plate (Pesto baked chicken, roasted bell peppers with cheese)

She started out in front of the fridge. Then she backwards scooted 5 feet away.

She's trying so hard to crawl. If only she could get that other foot out from under her!

Daddy snuggles.

Jax wrote "6, 7, 8" all on his own. I didn't even know he could do that! Who cares if the 7 and 8 are switched!

Fresh buzz cut. Love his low maintenance summer hair!

This one LOVES her sippy cup. She CHUGS water from that thing.

Jax passed his swimming level and is moving up to the next one. They get a ring a bell when they pass and everyone cheers for them. So cute!

His first time using a big boy knife... helping me chop strawberries for a big batch of freezer jam.

Love these two in their summer clothes!

Her first "ponytail". Ha! I think it looks both cute and ridiculous all at the same time.

She's just the cutest. I mean, really.

Little girl, big cup. I'm tellin' y'all, she LOVES cups!

I heart California and this beautiful weather!

9 months old

9 months... also known as way too close to one year!

I think I say it every month, but I just can't believe how old she is!

This month has been really fun. Lexi's little personality is starting to develop and she is becoming a very happy, giggly little girl. Jax was always very serious, and at first it seemed like Lexi was too. But recently she's become much more happy-spirited. She randomly just laughs and giggles... sometimes at nothing, which is kind of weird, but obviously very cute. She is always kicking her feet and bouncing around. She LOVES Jax and he loves doing anything to make her laugh. One of her favorite things is when he goes across the room, then comes running toward her. She kicks her legs, squeals with delight, then buries her face in my shoulder and starts cracking up. It's pretty much the cutest thing ever!

She is still a great eater and will eat most anything we put in front of her. Some of her favorites are avocado, banana, mandarin oranges, strawberries, pasta and chicken. She may or may not also really like chocolate :) She is also still a terrible sleeper. I honestly don't understand how she was the BEST sleeper when she was a newborn (she only woke up once at night), and now she wakes up at least twice, if not three times each night. Being sick over the holidays, plus getting (almost) 6 teeth over the past two months has completely ruined her sleep. Not cool.

Here are some of her stats for the month--

*16.8 pounds (22nd percentile... up from 11th percentile! Yay solid food!)

*28 inches (72nd percentile)

*18 inches head circumference (93rd percentile... awesome.)

*Size 3 diapers

*Just starting to move into 9 month clothes

*Size 2 shoes

*STILLLLLL not crawling, or pulling up to standing. Although, she is definitely getting close to crawling. She stretches and bends her legs to reach things and turns herself all around while sitting on her butt.

*She hates being strapped into her carseat but once you give her a pacifier and get her completely buckled, she's content. We're about to move her to the bigger convertible carseat since we rarely carry her in the infant carrier anymore.

*She is currently fighting a double ear infection and a little cough. Amoxicillin isn't helping her ears, and I really don't want to load her up on antibiotics anyway, so I'm currently trying some natural remedies (breast milk drops, garlic oil drops, essential oils) to see if those will help.

Overall, this month has been great and she is such a joy to our family.

Happy 9 months, sweet girl. We love you!

Becoming Crunchy: Part 2 {Products}

Follow me over on BlogLovin

I originally said that part two would be about cleaning products and toiletries, and I will talk about those, but I wanted to also add in baby products.

Just like we have done with our food, we have slowly been switching over all of our toiletries, baby products, and cleaning products to greener, less junky things. For the same reasons that we wanted to stop eating processed food, we also wanted to stop putting bad-for-us stuff on our skin, and especially on the kids' skin. We want to live long, healthy lives and we feel like this is a great way to help ensure that. So far we have been able to switch a lot of our products, but it is definitely still a work in progress.

I have done a lot of reading and researching about products, and what things to try to avoid. I frequently reference Good Guide and/or Skin Deep to look up products and their rating on the "good-for-you" scale. Good Guide has an app that I use to scan products while I'm looking at them in the store.

Here are some of my favorite products:

Cleaning supplies---
Granite spray: Method Daily Granite
Laundry detergent: Either Seventh Generation Liquid Laundry or Honest Company
Dishwasher detergent: Seventh Generation
Dish soap: Green Works
I just found this all-natural cleaning concentrate that is safe to clean houses and humans. I'm looking forward to trying it soon!

For baby---
Diapers: Seventh Generation Free and Clear
(You can 'subscribe and save' on Amazon, then discontinue it (if you want to) once they have been delivered)
Lotion: Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion (We will probably be switching to a different one soon because this one is good, but not great in terms of ingredients)

For grown ups---
This is the biggest area that is still a huge work in progress. I am still trying to find (or make from natural ingredients) good shampoo, conditioner, and face wash. And make-up... I honestly haven't even  started replacing my make-up.
We do really like Dr. Bronner's for bar soap/body wash.
The other super versatile thing I love is coconut oil. Y'all, it does EVERYTHING. Lotion, face moisturizer, shave "cream", diaper rash ointment, eczema treatment, deep conditioner for hair, and the list goes on and on.

As I said, this is all still a work in progress. I've gone through a lot of trial and error to find products that actually work. Everything listed here is tried and true in our household.

Do you have any suggestions for grown up products that we should try??

Our Easter

Just a few pictures from our Easter festivities. We like to focus on Jesus' resurrection, but we also like to do some of the fun traditions that accompany Easter time.

Dying Eggs

Easter baskets

It was 6am. Fun times.

This is her new cheesy smile. I'm obsessed.

We planted jelly beans for the Easter Bunny to come by at night and turn into lollipops. We treat the Easter Bunny the same way that we treat Santa Clause. Jax knows it's pretend but it's party of holiday fun.

Egg hunting at Grammy's house

LOTS of eggs!

More cheesy smile... and sinking down in the grass.

My sweet girl

My whole world

And for fun... what a difference a year makes!

He Is Risen!

"Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave...

Oh, death, where is your sting?
Oh, hell, where is your victory?
Oh, Church, come stand in the light
Our God is not dead, He's alive
He's ALIVE!"

Happy Easter, from our family to yours!

I pray that you have a very blessed day!

Becoming Crunchy: Part 1 {Food}

{Don't forget to come follow me on Bloglovin}

It all started shortly after Jax was born. After my horrible delivery with him, I was determined to do things differently next time. I was determined to have a VBAC (which I did!), and so I started researching natural birthing. Around the same time, we also started to slowly change the way we ate. Ryan and I watched documentaries like The Business of Being Born, and Food, Inc. Over the 3 years that followed, things started to shift, little by little, to a more natural way of living AKA "crunchy".

The biggest difference came about 6 months ago when I discovered a website called 100 Days of Real Food. The website started as a blog documenting one family's journey of completely eliminating processed food for 100 days. It has since turned into a lifestyle for them and has grown to have thousands of followers who are choosing to do the same thing. I began following the page on Facebook and started learning more and more about how much junk is added into our food supply, and how many myths there are about our food in general. Both things that are grown (plants, veggies, meats, etc) and things that come in boxes and bags at the grocery store. I started to realize that a lot of the stuff we were eating (and feeding Jax!) were full of artificial ingredients, flavors, and colors.

We decided to try a 30-day challenge of eliminating processed food. We had already been eating a lot of organic foods and fresh fruits and veggies, but we were still doing things like giving Jax a Pop-Tart every morning as a snack before his real breakfast. So we threw away all the junk, switched out Jax's Pop-Tart for a piece of fruit or cheese, and started making recipes from only real, unprocessed food. I made a few things from scratch instead of having the store bought, processed version. Things like strawberry syrup, chocolate syrup, granola, and cheese crackers (recipes below). Some of the food was easy to transition to and some of it was much harder. After the 30 days were over, we decided that we wanted to make it a lifestyle change for our family. We couldn't see ourselves going back to eating all the food that we had learned was so bad for our bodies.

Since then, we have been following these basic "rules"...

*We eat organic fruits and veggies, bought locally when possible.

*We eat local, free range eggs.

*We eat (mostly) organic dairy products such as cheese, yogurt and milk

*We only eat 100% whole grains (bread, pasta, tortillas etc). And I make most of them from scratch.

*We don't buy or eat anything that has ingredients that we can't pronounce & wouldn't cook with at home.

*When we do buy something pre-made from the store, it has to have 5 ingredients or less. And they have to follow the previous rule.

*We use all natural sweeteners, such as honey or maple syrup. Sugar is used in moderation, and when it is used, it is real sugar, not Truvia, Splenda, Equal, etc.

*We buy things plain/unflavored, like yogurt or milk, and flavor it ourselves.

For a further explanation of the "rules" and more information about how to successfully eat real food, go HERE.

We don't follow the rules 100% of the time. We still go out to eat at restaurants that we know have processed food, we still let Jax have birthday cake at parties, and I still go through the Starbucks drive through when I'm craving some yummy coffee. But most of the time, I add some cocoa powder, organic half and half, and maple syrup to my Keurig-brewed coffee and it's equally delicious.

It may seem crazy or a bit over-the-top to some people, but it is what we feel is right for our family. I'm no expert, but I would love to answer any questions you may have.
Stay tuned for Part 2 {Cleaning Supplies and Toiletries}, and Part 3 {Budgeting}.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

-Recipes mentioned above-

Berry Syrup
2 cups organic berries (fresh or frozen, thawed)
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup water

Combine in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Simmer for 5 minutes, remove from heat and puree with an immersion blender or in a stand blender. Pass through a fine sieve, let cool, then pour into a squeeze bottle and store in the fridge.

I mix this into plain yogurt or milk, or use it as a topping for waffles and pancakes.

Chocolate Syrup
1/2 cup cocoa powder
3/4 cup maple syrup
3/4 cup water
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt

Combine everything but vanilla into a small saucepan over medium hight heat. Boil for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Let cool, then pour into a squeeze bottle and store in the fridge.

I use this to make chocolate milk or hot chocolate.

Granola
 1 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup steel cut oats
1/2 cup raw slivered almonds, chopped
1/2 cup cashews, chopped
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
3 tbsp butter
1/4 cup honey
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 250*. Cover a small rectangular baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Mix oats, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin pie spice in a medium bowl and set aside.

Heat butter and honey in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil and cook for 3 minutes. turn off heat then stir in vanilla and salt.

Pour into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix well. Pour onto the prepared baking sheet, using a spatula to spread it out evenly.

Bake for 75 minutes then let cool to room temperature. It will harden as it cools. Break into large chunks to eat as granola bars or into smaller pieces to eat as granola. Store in an airtight container.

I eat the larger pieces as a snack. I eat the smaller pieces with milk and cut up banana, or as a topping for yogurt with berry syrup.

Cheese Crackers
8 oz cheddar (or other mild cheese), shredded
4 tbsp butter, cut into cubes
1 cup whole wheat flour
3/4 tsp salt
Up to 3 tbsp cold water

Pulse everything (except water) in food processor until it resembles course sand. Pulse in water 1 tablespoon at a time. Remove dough, wrap in plastic and chill for 20 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350. Roll out dough and cut into desired shapes. Place on parchment lined baking sheet and bake for about 15 minutes, or until crispy
