Not 84 degrees

Well... we aren't getting a new AC unit until Wednesday. However, the company we hired did manage to get us 2 in-room floor units that blow cold air. So for now our house isn't quite as boiling hot. It's still plenty warm because the in-room units have been working overtime trying to cool our house from the 90 degrees that it reached yesterday. YUCKKKK!!! But at least we have some cold air blowing. Plus, when we close our bedroom at night, the temperature in there really drops because the unit doesn't have to cool very much space. So for now, we're ok.

Ryan's parents are coming into town today for 10 days. I'm so glad they got a hotel because I would feel AWFUL if they had to be in our house at night with our broken AC. It's bad enough that they will be here during the day. But all that aside, I'm looking forward to spending family time with them. They haven't been to Fayetteville before so we are going to take them to all the cool military museums, show them some Southern hospitality and let them enjoy their new grandbaby. We are also driving down to Florida for the 4th of July weekend. I'm very much looking forward to a road trip. And I'm only a little nervous about how Jax will do. He's such a good baby so I really think it'll be fine. As long as he has a full tummy and a clean butt, he is pretty content.

YIPEE for vacay!

84 degrees

That's how stinkin' hot our house is. And our AC has been on ALL DAY. The unit is on the fritz. We are having all kinds of drama with our home warranty company to try to get it fixed. We have a 3-week-old baby in this hot house. It's not cool. Not cool at all... literally and figuratively.

We pay the home warranty people to fix things when they break, but apparently they don't wanna fix things that are expensive to fix. We have gone back and forth with them about what is broken, what needs to be fixed, how much it will cost and how much we have to pay out of pocket. Well, we shouldn't have to pay anything out of pocket because that's what the dang home warranty company is for. We pay them yearly (and a service fee when they come out) and they pay to fix things. I guess they have a different opinion about how this works. We've decided to just take a cash settlement and hire an outside company to completely replace everything. Now we are just fighting with the home warranty people to get an adequate settlement amount. And we are getting quotes from a few companies to see who is priced best.

This whole situation is frustrating and ridiculous. I guess the only good thing to come out of all of this is the fact that getting a whole new HVAC system means cheaper monthly bills, cleaner air for our baby to breathe and a $1500 tax credit next year for having an Energy Star unit. At least there is a small silver lining in this whole mess.

Praise Jeeesus!

Jax's 2 week checkup was Thursday and he is still perfect! I continue to be incredibly grateful that after everything he went through coming into this world, he is perfectly healthy. I pray everyday over his little body. I pray that he will continue to be healthy. I pray that there won't be any further complications that pop up in the future. I pray that God will continue to bless our little family.

2 week stats-
  • 8 lbs 11 oz  (He's gained an entire pound since we brought him home! Geez!)
  • 21.1 inches
One last thing... Grama bought Jax this adorable shirt. And of course he did his Praise Jeeeesus hands to go with it! And of course he is doing his angry face that he ALWAYS does. So funny! He's such a rock star :)

Bathtime!

We gave Jax his first bath on Saturday. He did so good! He wasn't fussy until the very end and even then, he just whined a little bit. I was so proud!

He's going to be two weeks old tomorrow and we are already noticing how much more grown up he is acting. He still refuses to sleep anywhere but in my arms at night. However, during the day I can put him in his vibrating bouncer and he hangs out... awake or asleep. It's awesome. He also does good if we put him in the boppy on the bed. He's getting much better at being okay if he's not in my arms. It's so bittersweet because I want to just hold him forever. Especially because I know that one day he won't let me do it anymore. Right now he snuggles on my chest and I LOVE it! But I know that he needs to be able to self-soothe and be able to be independent. We are working on trying to find a balance between coddling him too much but not abandoning him while he cries.

This is his favorite sleeping position. SO CUTE!!
(please ignore how insanely tired I look)

Hanging out in the boppy

Right now my biggest struggle is knowing what to do at night. Even if he is completely asleep, he wakes up within 5 minutes of me putting him down. He then proceeds to cry until we pick him up. I just lay him next to me in bed with my arm around him (so he can't roll over) and that's how we sleep. At this point he's so little still that I feel like I'm abandoning him by letting him sit and cry. At the same time, I don't want to spoil him to the point where we will have a really hard time switching him to his crib. Mommies out there... help! What did you do with your kids? At what point do I teach him to self soothe?  I don't really like co-sleeping, but what other choice do I have?

Instead of finishing with a question, I though I'd throw on these two pictures. When he sleeps (and even when he's not sleeping), he does funny things with his arms!
See....

Look at my belly button!

Funny story... After feeding Jax this morning, I stood up to go change him and something fell off my lap and down into the side of the chair I was sitting in. I figured that it was a crumb from my pop-tart breakfast, so I left it and took Jax to the nursery. As I was undressing him, I realized that his umbilical cord nub had come off. It then occurred to me that what I thought was a crumb was probably his umbilical cord. It had slipped out of his onesie and onto my lap. Yuck. I had to go dig in the side of the chair for it. Luckily I found it, proceeded to show it to Ryan, then threw it away. I didn't need umbilical cord nub hanging out in my chair indefinitely. But at least now Jax has a super cute belly button to show off. It's still healing a bit, but it's nice to not have to deal with the nub anymore. And now we can give him a bath. Yay for a clean baby!

Here's a cute picture of Jax and Mojo. They were playing and snuggling. SO CUTE!!! I can't wait for Jax to get bigger... they are going to be best friends!

Labor and Delivery

Jax is one week old today! Yipee! In honor of this mini-birthday, I thought I would share how our beautiful boy came into this world. I will insert a warning here...

***if you are pregnant (and you know who you are), this story will probably make you very nervous. I know you will most likely read it anyway, but just know that the circumstances were really freaky and uncommon and are NO indicator of how most labor/deliveries happen***

... ok, now onto the story.

Monday, June 1st- I went in at 9am to get checked and see if they had a bed available for me to be induced. After being told that they did and waiting for almost 2 hours, we were turned away because the beds filled up. We were told to call at 3pm and see if they had anything available. At 2:30, I called back (I was anxious!). They told us to come on in. We were having a baby! We got to the hospital only to be told that they weren't sure if they could admit us. I put my foot down, told them that I wasn't coming back and they finally admitted me. At 5pm, I was put on an IV drip of Pitocin.

Tuesday, June 2nd- By 9am, I was having contractions but they weren't regular and were hardly helping me dilate. The nurse decided to take me off Pitocin, let me get something to eat and restart the Pitocin after an hour had passed. By 11am, I was back on the Pitocin and finally having some more contractions, although they still weren't much. At 2:30 they poked my water. I say "poked" because they didn't actually break it. Jax was still sitting high and they didn't want his cord to get under his head then get stuck. By poking my water, it allowed small amounts to come out slowly. By 5pm, my contractions were pretty brutal and I was dilated to 5cm. Time for the drugs! I got an epidural and life got much better. Over the next few hours we all napped and tried to rest until it was time to push.

Wednesday, June 3rd- At 2am, I was dilated to 10cm and it was time to push. I pushed for 4 hours. Yes. 4 HOURS. He refused to come out. We could see his head but for some reason, it wouldn't move past my pelvic bone. Everyone told me that I was pushing great and making progress. We still have no idea why he didn't come out. The doctor finally decided that a c-section would be the next step. I really wanted to push him out, but at that point I was so incredibly tired that I just couldn't do it anymore.
They prepped Ryan and I for the c-section, told Ryan to wait outside while they got me all set up, then wheeled me into the operating room. During my pushing, my epidural had come out so they were going to put a spinal tap in for the c-section. Once it was in and I laid back down, I started to feel very nauseous. Then my body started to tingle. I asked if it was normal and the doctor said that it was only normal if it was just my hands tingling. Well, it wasn't just my hands. It was all over. Then I started realizing that I couldn't get deep breaths. I told the doctor that I was having trouble breathing and they put me on oxygen... which did not do a darn thing. Very quickly I realized that I pretty much wasn't able to breathe. At all. I tried to say something but I realized that I couldn't talk either. Scary! Luckily, the doctor realized I wasn't doing so great and said "ok, we are going to put you under". The last thing I remember was hearing him say "we need to intubate her". Next thing I knew, I woke up in a recovery room, still on oxygen and completely numb from my belly down. I hadn't even seen my baby.
It wasn't until a little later that I learned that my anesthetic had really messed up Jax and when they pulled him out, they had to do CPR for FIVE minutes to bring him back. He had an initial APGAR score of zero. That's pretty much unheard of. Although I was pretty devastated with how everything turned out, I was so glad that I hadn't seen my baby doing so poorly. I don't know what I would have done.
Well, apparently what caused all of this was that my spinal had gone high. It's very uncommon and rare, but for some reason it travelled higher than it was supposed to and therefore messed with my chest. It's a major bummer how everything turned out and I really wish it had been different. But I just keep remembering that both Jax and I are healthy now. Above anything else, that is what I'm most thankful for. And I'll always have a very... interesting story to tell about how our beautiful baby boy came into this world.

Happy one-week birthday baby. We love you!

7 days of change

It was one week ago today when I went to the hospital to be induced. Who would have thought that it would last all the way until Wednesday morning?! This week I will put together a post about everything that happened (for those of you who want to know). For now, here are some pictures from the past week...
